A Taste of Zen in Tea

We are accustomed to an extremely fast pace of life without even noticing when it started. Often, there is no room to take a good, long breath. We are constantly striving to cope with assignments and schedules, and are worried and exhausted in body and spirit. Perhaps what we need most to do is to anchor ourselves, slowing tasting each bite of food and every sip of drink.

“A Taste of Zen in Tea” is a workshop that offers us a chance to slow down. By treasuring every moment of tea drinking, we explore the possibility of “rebooting”. During an online workshop of 1.5 hours, the teacher introduced the principles and procedures of tea meditation, and invited students to brew and drink tea together. After the ceremonial tea drinking, students were organized in small groups and had exchanges on the experience. In the process, they gained new understanding of “mindfulness” practices, in particular tea mediation, and acquired a deeper understanding of the related classics. Students could experience first-hand Ven. Sheng-yen’s saying: “Where your body is, where your mind shall be.” Each individual’s mindfulness practice is the beginning of good health and well-being (SDG#3) for all.
