Farming at CUHK

Farming activities have been cropping up in different parts of the CU campus—farm on the hilltop, farm atop a new teaching block, Farmers’ Market. After years of preparation and trials, the rooftop of Hui Yeung Shing Building has also been transformed for community farming. The saying goes, “As you sow, so shall you reap.” Does it apply to rooftop farming? On a campus with rich ecological diversity, how shall we live with all the creatures and beings? What are pests and weeds? Through two months of farming experience, we could rethink the difference between artificial selection and natural selection as conceptualized by Charles Darwin (On The Origin of Species), or experience through sweaty labor Karl Marx’s critical discussion of alienated labor (Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844).

Other than experiencing classics, students joining this activity could gain bonus marks in UGFH1000 or UGFN1000 by completing a post-trip questionnaire and writing a reflective essay. There was also an additional question that they could choose from for the final term paper. The activity spanned over two months, beginning in sowing and ending in a harvest party. The thirty student farmers each wrote a reflection on the experience and the related classics. Some of the excellent reflections can be found here.
