Nature in Community

Mother nature is endless for us to explore, human beings gain food through farming and raising livestock, we could also receive tranquility and insights when coming in contact with nature. Nonetheless, as most people living in metropolitan cities with hectic lifestyles, we might forget to listen to our minds and the voice from nature. At 2021-22 term one, with mentors of Mountain and the Sea Educo leading the way, we visited two old villages on Hong Kong Lantau Island – Tai O and Yi O, which were once a fishing village and farming village, and had a chance to understand the dependent relationship of the two villages in the past. Deserted for more than 30 years, there are now villagers and local cooperative trying to restore the farmland in Yi O, reviving the vitality of the village. Students put down their cellphones to harvest and thresh rice, cook lunch by using local ingredients, so that they could experience the intimate relations between nature and community. Students were invited to connect and reflect on the philosophy of interbeing in The Heart of Understanding, Marx’s criticism of capitalism, and the relevant sustainable development goals (SDGs). After this one-day nature experiencing activity, students wrote down their feelings and reflections. Some of the excellent writings can be found here.
