Experiencing Mindfulness

For days and months on end, we have been faced with social turbulence, COVID-19, and many local and global challenges, inevitably leaving us anxious and despaired. Social distancing policies and the switch to online classes have also kept us apart. Where do we begin to make sense of the current times? Can we still stay calm and be at ease? Maybe we could start from taking a breath mindfully.

“Experiencing Mindfulness” was a series of two 1.5-hour biweekly sessions organized by a group of UGFN1000 and UGFH1000 teachers to allow meditation from home. Other than introducing the notion of “mindfulness meditation”, students were invited to do various kinds of meditation practices with course teachers and fellow students, including walking mediation, standing mediation, listening to the singing bowl, banana meditation, etc. Through the activity, students learnt to do different types of mediation while also gaining a deeper understanding of ideas in the classics such as “interbeing” from The Heart of Understanding—if the state of our body and mind is affected by what goes on around us, it follows that the more we practice meditation, the easier it will be for our body and mind to attain quietude and peace, thus leading to good health and well-being (Sustainable Development Goal #3).
