以禪修體驗經典 Meditation with Classics

自2019年,我們都深受肺炎疫情和喧囂擾攘的社會困擾。我們既懊惱自己未能改變過去,亦對未知的將來感到憂慮,我們該如何自處呢?

冥想(Meditation),在佛教的修行傳統中稱為「禪修」,是一種精神上的訓練,重點皆是持續將注意力放於某事物上,而其中一種禪修方式則為正念冥想(Mindfulness Meditation),以覺察並專注體驗當下、達致輕安澄明為目的。在正念練習中,我們有意識地覺察自己當下的情緒、行為、思想等而不作判斷,可幫助我們了解內心,從而鍛練以開放的態度接納人生的各種可能,並有智慧地解決人生的各種問題。

佛教修行雖然是看似古老,但在現代社會仍然展現活力。 例如建立梅村道場的一行禪師,積極推廣世俗化的「正念」修習, 並為佛教在追求社會進步及公義給予理論基礎。 此外,西方學者近年來以科學實證的方法研究以「正念」修習,在促進身心理健康的效用。聯合國於2015年提出的17個可持續發展目標中,其中包括了「良好健康與福祉」(目標3),正好說明在物質豐裕的現代社會,人們仍面對著心理健康及人生價值失落等挑戰, 而佛教修行傳統的現代化,足證傳統智慧在現代社會的價值。

Many of us have been deeply troubled by COVID-19 and social turbulence since 2019. Being frustrated and anxious about unchangeable regrets and unpredictable future, how can we deal with all these matters?

Meditation, also known as “Chan meditation” in traditional Buddhism, is a spiritual training to develop continuous attention to a particular object without judgment. Mindfulness Meditation is one among different kinds of meditation. In practicing mindfulness, we consciously direct our awareness to the present feeling, action, and thought. When we are mindful and focused on the present experience, we can better understand our mind and acquire clarity and calmness. Fostering an openness to embrace different possibilities in life, mindfulness meditation will help us tackle doubts and difficulties more wisely.

Buddhist practices seem ancient but still exhibit vitality in modern society. Take Thich Nhat Hanh, founder of Plum Village, as an example. The Buddhist monk actively promotes secularized mindfulness practices, laying a theoretical foundation for the Buddhist pursuit of social progress and justice. In recent years, Western scientists have conducted empirical studies on the physical and psychological benefits of mindfulness practices. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015, 「good health and well-being」 was listed as Goal 3. This shows that even in the affluent modern world, people continue to face challenges in mental health and loss of meaningfulness in life. The modernization of Buddhist meditation thus demonstrates the value of traditional wisdom in modern society.
