家農體驗工作坊 Experiential Learning through Home-planting

農業與我們日常生活息息相關,供給我們林林總總的食糧和原材料。透過認識和體驗農耕活動,不僅重新喚起我們與大自然的連繫,也能加深我們對經典文本和全球議題的了解。在疫情的影響下,基於對師生的安全考慮,以農耕體驗經典的活動在2020-21 上學期首次以網上形式進行,讓同學身在家中也能參與有限度的種植體驗活動。

「家農體驗工作坊」共有四節,每兩星期一節,每節九十分鐘。四節工作坊中,講授了多個農業相關的主題和可持續發展目標(SDGs),也邀請同學一同在家種植,交流心得。同學在參與幾星期的種植體驗活動後,獲得了不少種植的技巧和知識,認識永續農業的原則和設計,也對經典文本有更深入的體會:讚嘆沃森在《DNA:生命的秘密》提出的遺傳機制;反思卡森在《寂靜的春天》對大量使用除草劑和除蟲劑的討論;體會一行禪師於《般若之心》所說的互即互入。與此同時,這個活動也促使同學反思不同全球議題,例如糧食分配和生產、農戶被剝削等等,藉此扣連多個可持續發展目標(SDGs),包括「負責任消費和生產」(SDG#12)、「水下生物」(SDG#14)和「陸地生活」(SDG#15)。活動後,同學寫下了一些反思文章,請到此頁瀏覽:同學反思:家農體驗工作坊

Agriculture is closely related to our daily life, providing us with diverse kinds of food and raw materials. In learning about and participating in farming, we can reconnect with nature while also deepen understanding of the classics and global issues. With the pandemic still ravaging and the safety of students and teachers a prime concern, “Farming with Classics” was held online for the first time in Term 1, 2020-21 to allow a taste of farming experience even from home.

“Experiential Learning through Home-planting” was a series of four 1.5-hour biweekly sessions. A multitude of agriculture-related topics and SDGs was covered. Students were invited to grow vegetables at home and share their experience at the end of each session. After several weeks of home-farming, students got to master the basic skills and knowledge and learn about permaculture principles and designs. They also gained a better understanding of ideas in UGFN1000 and UGFH1000, be it Waston’s theory of DNA and genetic mechanism (DNA: The Secret of Life), Carson’s concern about herbicide/pesticides overuse (The Silent Spring), or Thich Nhat Hanh’s philosophy of inter-being (The Heart of Understanding). The activity induced reflection on such global issues as unjust food distribution and exploitation of farmers, in connection with SDGs such as responsible consumption and production (SDG#12), life below water (SDG#14) and life on land (SDG#15).
